Sunflower Story

The sunflower ( helianthus annuus ) is a summer annual best known for its large daisy-like flowers which can produce several hundred seeds each. The name is derived from the the Greek words helios (sun) and anthos (flower).  The reason for this name is that the flowers are heliotropic; they bend towards the sun.

The sunflower is the symbol of the sun god because at dawn it starts to turn its flowers toward sunrise. In Greek mythology, the sunflower came to be because of a water nymph who was in love with the sun god Apollo. When he did not return her affections, she watched him from dawn to dusk, and soon her hair transformed into golden petals; her face, into the center of the flower, and her body, into the stem. The sunflower is often used as a symbol of green ideology. It is now the symbol of the Vegan Society.

Native Americans are believed to have used the sunflower for more than 3000 years before the plant was introduced in Europe in the 16th century. Mayans worshiped the sunflower as a symbol of light and fertility and drank tea made of its leaves and ate the seeds, stems, leaves and petals. Today, the plant grows in many areas including Europe and Central America.

With its bright yellow petals, the beautiful sunflower plant is a great treat to the eyes, and often used in gardens, summer bouquets, decorations and crafts such as soaps, candles and potpourri. Sunflower petals produce a natural food dye ranging from golden yellow to orange colors. The seeds are the most consumed part of the plant, but flower petals, leaves and stems are also edible. Sometimes sprinkled on salads, sunflower petals can also be infused into a golden tea or used in the bath as their sunny appearance makes a lovely contribution to most any creation.

Brewing Instruction

This herbal tea is delicious hot or iced - and even reheated the following day!

HOT TEA

With tea bag

One sachet is good to infuse a whole tea pot of 2-4 cups (300-600 ml); to your taste. We recommend that you infuse the tea bag only once to enjoy the natural colors that will be released with the first infusion.

Infuse 1 sachet in 300-600 ml of freshly boiled water for 5-10 min. Make sure to keep tea covered while steeping so that the health promoting essential oils don't evaporate. When it is to your taste, remove the tea bag and serve. If you have any leftover, just refrigerate and reheat gently the following day.

With loose tea

Before scooping, shake your FloralTea tin upside down to blend, for perfect taste and color from one cup to the next.

Scoop 1-2 g of blend per cup; to your taste. Infuse in freshly boiled water for 5-10 min. When it is to your taste, filter and serve. If you have any leftover, just refrigerate and reheat gently the following day.

ICED TEA

Follow the above instructions for hot tea, and then refrigerate before serving. You can freeze a portion in ice cubes and use them instead of regular ice cubes to keep your tea iced cold without diluting the taste when the ice cubes are melting. If you have any leftover, just refrigerate again and serve cold the following day.
